Chiark-Gevantsa Jernau Morat Gurgeh dam Hassease was a morat, or game player, and a citizen of the Culture who lived on Chiark Orbital. He was one of the Culture's greatest game-players, and was recruited by Special Circumstances to travel to the Empire of Azad to play the high-stakes game of Azad.
