Coherent Radiation Emission Weapons Systems (CREWS) are a type of Culture weapon, an advanced form of a laser weapon.[1]
Culture CREWS could vary their frequency from visible light to high X-ray.[2][3]

Laser weapons were available in sizes ranging from personal use to starship mountings. The Megaships of Vavatch Orbital used bow mounted systems to clear obstructions they could not avoid.[4]
Countermeasures included anti-laser chaff[5] and mirror fields[6]. Reflective materials were also effective; the Temple of Light on Marjoin was made of such materials.[1]
